Haiti: Transitional Council in Gangs' Crosshairs
The gang coalition maintains the argument that the CPT was born in Jamaica under the sponsorship of the Caribbean Community and under the watchful eye of the United States government, and therefore has no validity whatsoever. The bandits claim that they left out sectors of the Haitian citizenry, including people with known links to them, and repeat time and again that the government should be born in Haiti and not outside its borders.

Brazil Supreme Court strikes down military intervention thesis in symbolic vote for democracy
The court’s decision came in response to an argument that right-wing former President Jair Bolsonaro and his allies deployed in recent years. They have claimed that Article 142 of Brazil’s Constitution affords the military so-called “moderating power” between the executive, legislative and judicial branches.

The West Papua National Liberation Army and Separatist Militancy in Indonesia
A Brief History: Given the history of the Papuan provinces, it is no surprise that the conditions are ripe for insurgency. The provinces, which are collectively referred to as West Papua by pro-independence elements, were taken over by Indonesia following the Dutch withdrawal in the 1960s. Indonesia’s takeover was supported by the United States and other Western powers, who were trying to assert global dominance against the spread of communism in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. These dynamics led to the formation of the Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM), or the Free Papua Movement. Papuan calls for independence have only strengthened since the 1960s due to several factors. These include various allegations of human rights abuses by Indonesian forces, the exploitation of resources in the Papuan provinces, and the ethnic and religious differences between Papuans and the rest of Indonesia. There is a high degree of racism towards Papuans in Indonesia; this was the main factor in the 2019 unrest in West Papua and Indonesia. There are several more reasons why the insurgency has brewed in the Papuan provinces; these have been well documented by others.

Is ‘artificial intelligence’ a threat or a promise?
POPULAR debate over the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) tends to be couched in terms of utopias or dystopias. Will AI lead to some benign post-capitalist paradise — “fully automated luxury communism” perhaps, or to a hellish “technofeudalism”? The answer of course is probably neither (though, yes, capitalism could get even worse!). Policy debate tends by contrast to focus on responses — education, reskilling, the need to remain competitive by removing barriers to the adoption of AI, and more vague exhortations that “we” need to make sure that the potential benefits are realised. (Sometimes a virtuous “and shared” is added). Rishi Sunak’s much-hyped AI Summit in November 2023 at Bletchley Park (once the top-secret home of the World War II code-breakers) was a cosy natter between the 28 country representatives and the world’s major tech corporations — with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk prominently featured. It produced nothing but a vague joint communiqué warning of the risks from so-called “frontier” AI models and calling for “inclusive global dialogue” plus an (entirely voluntary) agreement on safety testing. But technology is not autonomous. Within capitalism it is introduced for profit or control — usually both. In computing, as in the history of technology generally, the replacement, routinisation and regulation of human labour in search of profit has been a prime driver of innovation. In the Communist Manifesto Marx and Engels emphasised the dynamism of technology under capitalism. Constant “revolutionising [of] the instruments of production,” they wrote, leads to changes in the nature of production, destabilising everything.
