Watch how quickly the conzoomers forget about it the moment Starfield is released.
They forgot TotK. They forgot FF16. They will forget BG3 as soon as the next big thing is hyped up by the media.

I think what the guy is trying to allude to is that in the past people spent more time playing the same games due to lack experience, access to internet etc, people would also form cult like communities around media. I think all of these things really depend on the product, undertale was one short game but the story and characters allowed for a large community to form. The same in theory could happen with this game if there is enough to discuss and experiment with. You won’t see something similar from around battle field or cod because those games lack interesting characters, worlds and actually interesting mechanics to discuss.

They're saying it's an anomaly, that corporate business practices don't reward the kind of investment that Larian made so people shouldn't get their hopes up about it setting the standard for future RPGs. React streamers/tubers took this to mean devs HATE BG3 (and gamers more generally) and make shitty games on purpose because they're lazy, completely missing the point that devs can beg to imitate BG3 but executives will look at the numbers and refuse because they'll always make more money devoting resources to lootboxes instead.

It's above average but not some groundbreaking game, just a well made one, that still, like all Larian titles, show lack of polish and noticeable cut content later in the game. They usually fix it with some sort of Definitive Edition later on, that's free for the owners of the base version.

Tears of kingdom was alright but it didn’t have the freshness and sense of grounded ness botw did. I still prefer the first game. Final fantasy 16 is garbage for a multitude of reasons but the most pressing one is it’s over the top combat system. Combat feels like watching a drawn out anime fight scene with shitty dialogue and it shows when you stare at videos of veteran gamers trying to kill boss fights in less than half a fucking hour. BG3 is gonna be played by people that actually give a shit about its style of gameplay similar to Skyrim, dark souls 2, far cry 3, tlou2 and more. Wether or not it’s remembered doesn’t matter.

It is literally cheating but it is generally tolerated because the DM does it and in the tabletop it often lets the party to progress through the campaign easier. What even is the use for it in a CRPG where there are difficulty settings available is beyond me.

 No.30028

>>30027
There are times when you get like a bunch of real bad or real good rolls in a string and it fucks things up but that's part of the randomness and can make for some of the most memorable moments in an TTRPG. It's weird and bad in either but especially in a cRPG where it's all pre-written the right way to do this kind of thing is just not roll for it if there is a specific outcome you want to happen. It's like amateur GMs who make players roll for everything even when it doesn't make sense, like they walk into a room and all fail to notice the important statue or whatever because you felt like they had to roll for that.

>It's very good, but lacking some polish towards the end.

Just got to the baldurs gate city and noticed this as well. Feel like earlier in the game theres a lot more dialogue branches that stood out from a lot of other CRPGs because there was an option for how I actually wanted my character to respond, but getting towards the end of the game the dialogue is starting to feel more like rote RPG options, i.e. Respond with: 1. Generic yes 2. Mean comment 3. Further question 4. Generic no

 No.30032

>>29738
It's great overall. Gameplay is fun and the encounters are fantastic, which is Larian's biggest strong point. Writing is hit and miss and inherently handicapped because it's fully voiced, but the companions are charming enough and there's good characters to meet. The world design is and level design are both great. Act 2 is a bit awkwardly paced and act 3 needs some post-launch support.

It's not the greatest crpg to drop and it doesn't feel like a true sequel to Baldur's Gate 2 (if you want that play Pillars of Eternity) instead feeling like divinity original sin 3, but it's worth playing and I'd like to see it get an expansion.

My biggest annoyance is that it feels like I can't ever say no to people. I can say no (i'll think about it) and no (fight). Refusing quests and conversations in general is expected of this genre and I have quests stuck in my quest log despite saying no.

 No.30041

>>30032
completely agree on every count. in a sense i like how act 2 is weird & restrictive, but youre right that the problem is pacing. also very confused by how talking to whatsername upstairs of last light right away triggers kiling half the NPCs you know? i savescummed to avoid it so idk if its somehow retracted plotwise but yeah i was so ready for a breath of fresh air getting to baldurs gate, but act 3 so far feels fairly rushed & really poorly optimized as far as takes a while for even the whole screen to load in & most NPC dialogue the faces dont render right (my PC is above recommended specs)

still absolutely recommend the game tho, ultimately these are nitpicks compared to general excellent quality)

 No.30045

>>30041
Yeah the pacing is the problem because the gameplay is fine overall, it makes sense that there's less side quests and the two dungeons in the act are both great. The point of no return is retardedly placed however. Also I somehow never fucked the fight because I saw that the boss' attacks weren't named "main weapon attack" and figured I had to protect her. Sanctuary proved super useful and I only found out what happens to the inn if you fail after I talked to my friend who bought it for me after she asked what I thought about act 2.

Act 3 is a chore for me especially because my PC is below minimum, I was able to get 30-40fps for most areas on ultra (no fucking clue how my game can run on ultra, or how I can even run it to begin with quite frankly) but until I messed around with settings I would get single digit frames for the lower city. Now I get slightly less than 30. I like some of the stuff they're doing with it but a performance patch is necessary.

A+ CRPG. Might eventually become one of the greats if it gets an expansion or two with the writers and designers firing on all cylinders.

 No.30050

>>30028
The problem I see with it is we don't know how it works exactly.
For instance you could use 2d10 or 2d6+1d8 instead of a 1d20. This would make failures and successes far less likely but would also essentially make crit useless.
The problem is the 5e rulset has been balanced around the flat probability distribution of 1d20 and unless the fudging process doesn't affect the distribution that balance will be out of whack.
I'm not even sure it's possible to fudge dice without affecting the distribution.

That said a bell shaped distribution see:
https://anydice.com/program/3599
is more "natural" because it's closer to how physical processes happen but then you'd need to get rid of additive bonuses because a bell shape in physics will always be between 0 and some number.

were talking about the same fight, right? where you go to talk to isobel for the blessing, as jaheira explicitly directs you and reminds you to do, and then it causes isobel to get kidnapped and the entire inn gets taken over by the shadowcurse? i savescummed because i kept losing the battle, but then realized i was able to progress fine without talking to isobel, and finished act 2 without all of those NPCs dying. still really confused what happened there, it was presented as the next main objective and then arbitrarily just through interacting with that objective all the harpers and tieflings and everyone gets killed? but you can completely avoid it, just only through pure metagaming? i feel like i have to be missing something but i dont think so

Yeah, the very same. I figured you needed to protect her during round one and did all I could to throw defense/healing spells her way, and area denial on doorways. I can't blame you or anyone in general for not noticing the different name on the attack, I have to read carefully as a third language speaker.

My party has MC as pally and SH (with the legendary mace you get in the mountain pass) so that will massively tip the scales in my favour, but I imagine it shouldn't be too difficult with any party with a single caster to block off choke points.

One fasctinating thing about BG3 to me is, I've never played it and because of its hardware requirements, I probably never will, but I'm still interested in it, so I pay attention.

And I've got a good grasp on a lot of the character dynamics, and they seem very fun and well written and enjoyable and everything, but…

I've read so many posts about BG3.

And I have no idea what the plot is.

What do you do in this game? What is even the premise? Literally nobody is talking about this. So far as I can tell, this is a game where you hang out with Astarion and Shadowheart. What are you trying to DO at the time?

Nobody has even mentioned a word. I have genuinely no idea what the basic plot or conflict is.

Mindflayers attack Baldur's Gate, you and a bunch of captives (including your companions) are transported into a flying mindflayer ship and have tadpoles put in your brains that will turn you into mindflayers soon so after you escape the ship you need to find someone who can remove the tadpoles. The tutorial has you escaping the ship and the rest follows pretty quickly after.

Hellboy lives in and grew up in the modern world, though. The juxtaposition of being a demon with normal guy vibes is kind of the point. Baldur's Gate is set in the forgotten realms. Tieflings in general (1994) tend to be copying Hellboy (1993), but it doesn't hit the same because the whole setting is fantasy, so you can't do as strong of a juxtaposition. If you give a tiefling modern looking clothes and hair, that will make them seem more out of place in the setting than their fiendish traits.

>Nobody has even mentioned a word. I have genuinely no idea what the basic plot or conflict is.
Probably because it's typical Larian power fantasy crap that doesn't do justice to the setting. A mishmash of everything without any coherence. It's very similar to how 4yo would do a "cool" superhero "and he is strong and can fly like superman, smart like batman and has a cool car, fast like flash, can read minds…" and so on. You have illithids fighting giths, you have powerful devils, you have shar and seluine conflict, you have mystra and karsus' folly, you have ancient vampires, you have (fucking again) dead three (there is an almost literal captain planet moment there ffs) and so on. What you don't have is a good plot binding it together and interesting characters to represent different sides and opposing views. But hey, you can have fanservice galore instead.

That's why people don't talk about plot and talk about Karlach tits instead. Because it's the only thing worth talking about in this game.

I wish just once people did research on clothing and everyday utilities so i wouldn't have to look at another mishmash of early medieval, late medieval, renaissance and enlightenment with good infusion of modernity. Or reiteration of "dung ages" trope.

Things like clothing is influenced by many things from the available tools to people's daily life. I just want for authors to put a bit of thought in the setting background, so it would feel more alive.

 No.30860

>>30858
Yeah its just wacky xdddd encounters while looking for cure for literal brainworms and nothing more contrived than this other than the Illithid attacks being part of Bhaal and friends' shenanigans. Almost Rick & Morty-tier plot writing that ruins what could have been a 10/10 story.

 No.30865

>>30859
Well it's fantasy so it can be whatever they want. You are right though that it's usually boring and samey. The BG3 clothes seem to lean heavily toward tight-fitting pants which is pretty unfitting both for the medieval theme and for adventurers. You'd think it'd be easier to model and rig thicker clothes with many layers for the multiple body types since that gives you more room for error, but idk not a modeler.

>>30860
Critical Role and its consequences. Although it probably has more to do with the conflict between player choice and an established plot. The morre disconnected and episodic the content, the less you have to worry about what the player chose in the last part of the story. lolsorandumb is a crutch to deal with that.

You could develop a more sophisticated story and quest system for a game like this (and it would be more appropriate) but then you wouldn't be able to have the game's main selling point, which is the extensive dialogues with full voice acting and animated expressions. You'd have to rely on text or TTS and procedural generation, and that completely removes one of the key selling points. You literally cannot have player choice beyond choose your own adventure while at the same time having these high-budget cutscenes.

People are impressed by the foresight of the developers to include scenes for all kinds of interactions, but those are only possible because of the degree to which your interactions can be restrained by the game's systems. There's a whole thing about ideology you could unpack with that, honestly. I think a big factor in the game seeming so impressive for now is that it's still new and most people have only played through it once if they've completed it at all, so they aren't aware of how shallow the choice is (yet).

Many beloved media were so liked because they still had stories to tell. In the case of shows, even their weakest episodes had a decent basis for a story, and most of the gags are a direct result of what happens in the plot.
You take that away and the gags are lacking in any real setup and payoff, so all you're left with is references and "wacky" randomness, like in this case.

 No.30872

>>30865
>Well it's fantasy so it can be whatever they want.
No, just because it's "fantasy" doesn't mean you can just pull random shit out of your ass. That's how you get shitty writing. Fantasy settings should feel alive, meaning they too should have their own laws even if they are different from our own. What results from "it's a fantasy" approach is nothing but a random selection of earth's cultures, norms, clothings and so on without thought or reason behind them.

>The BG3 clothes seem to lean heavily toward tight-fitting pants which is pretty unfitting both for the medieval theme and for adventurers. Baldur's Gate takes place in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. The Gith are from the Planescape campaign setting. So, they actually are two different settings. The thing is, all D&D campaigns are supposed to exist within the same multiverse with each other. And for reasons that should be obvious to anyone familiar with Planescape, the Planescape setting is uniquely poised to have crossovers with other campaign settings.

I'm currently playing through act3 as Durge and here is how it looks to me, in hindsight:

Act 1:
Finished, packed and polished.

Act 2:
Unfinished, rushed and sparse. You can practically feel the budget/devtime vanishing(though ironically, you will never see the shadowcurse subside) halfway through.

Act 3:
Unfinished, cobbled together from whatever they already had half done, in a rush. It's crammed with half cooked gameplay, hacked together story bits and rushed/missing resolutions in equal part. Some aspects of it, like the circus, feel like an afterthought filler built around spare voice lines in the last minute. While others, like Sorcerous Sundries, have a shine of thoroughly polished turd, by people who weren't given anything else to do for weeks on end.

Act 4:
Cannibalized in it's infancy by Act3, which now wear's it's overstretched skin like a "mankini".

Act 5:
Surely you mean DLC and "seasonal" patches

I've only recently picked up the game. It seems significant changes were made since early access that watered down story bits without building on top of what was already there.
And the game was incredibly buggy maybe until just recently, too.
